Top 10 Tips for Newbies to Beyond Chocolate
#1 – Remind yourself time and again that there is no success or failure with Beyond Chocolate. The important thing is to ask yourself, very often, if this path feels *right* for you. Commit to it over and over again. That is success- no matter how many times you stray, or dawdle on the way, or get distracted by something easier and shinier, or even walk backward and get on another path until you find this one again. Welcome yourself back with open arms, a hundred times and more. You’re not failing, you’re a human being doing her best in an extremely complicated world. Go You!
#2- Find allies. From the practices that support your soul, to the bras that fit your boobs, to the clothes that fit and honour you, from the friends who “get it”, the kind and insightful therapist who “gets it”, the spiritual figures who guide you, the places that nourish you and the books that blow your mind– allies are everywhere. They don’t even need to be human. Even your environment can be an ally. A cozy corner in the house where you can rest and be yourself. A crowded and sweaty dance floor. Wherever your church is. Support yourself- and find lots and lots of stuff that support you too.
#3- There are no brownie points. There is curiosity. You don’t have to be good at it (see #1), you just have to show up for it as much as you can.
#4- Microsteps are the bee’s knees. Don’t freak yourself out with how far you still feel you need to go. Start where you are. And start again. One action a day…
#5- Spend time exploring your other hungers. Once in a while, take out a sheet of paper and write “Today, I am hungry for…” at the top and write for five minutes without stopping. Then do the same starting with “Today, I am nourished by…”
#6- A diet will never love you back.
#7- In the words of Geneen Roth, “When you eat at the refrigerator, pull up a chair.” You’re overeating anyway, why not enjoy it?
#9- Find out anything you can about what you love doing. Find out how you can do more of it.
#10- Here you are. You’re alive. You have a body. And if you’re on this page, this path, you’re a f*** bad-ass rebel woman standing up for herself and refusing to buy into Big Bullshit Diet world in its many guises. Take THAT, Kim K!
I hope this list can help some of you out there as much as it helps me in “times that try the soul” (as Anne of Green Gables would say) smile emoticon Much love everyone xxxxx
