Tuning-In Part Deux. What do we do with the information gathered from Tuning In?
So, now that you know you can feel the floor cold beneath your feet, are feeling grumpy and are thinking about tinsel – what do you do with that information?
Well, nothing actually.
What Tuning In does is gives us a chance to reconnect with ourselves rather than giving us information about thoughts and feeling to change. Stay with me.
Tune in again.
This time you can feel tension as stiffness in your shoulders, you are feeling slightly sick and are thinking about those gorgeous shoes you promised yourself you would buy when you are thin.
With this Tuning In experience, I would point out gently that feeling sick is another physical sensation – have another go at how you are feeling?
Ok. I’m feeling cross.
Excellent. Keep on Tuning In. Oh and by the way, if you can afford it, buy those shoes now – you will look fabulous just as you are!
I like to use Tuning In as a way of noticing when I’m over-eating and a way of reasoning from cause to effect – I find it helps me. For example, I’m aware that I’m eating and I’m not hungry so I Tune In. Hmm. I’m aware of a slight throbbing headache over my left eye. I’m feeling anxious and I’m thinking about all the things I meant to have done by the end of today. And haven’t. Of those three, the feeling anxious is the one that helps me to realise why I am reaching for the food and now I can choose whether I eat to soothe that feeling or whether I let the feeling run its course and eventually give way to another feeling – I have learned that no feeling lasts very long. (Editor’s note: if you so wish, click on this interesting post by Tiny Buddha to find out more about feeling awareness…Basically echoing that no feeling lasts forever!)
However, this is only what I do with Tuning In. What you can do is up to you based on your own experience of Tuning In and your own individual eating patterns and emotions etc. What is important is that you keep gathering the information; that you keep on getting back in touch with your body, that you come to recognise patterns perhaps in your own behaviour and that you now have a powerful tool to short-circuit those patterns you want to change.
Also Tuning In is invaluable and interwoven with all the other 9 Principles; so watch this space to see how Tuning In can help you with the rest of your Beyond Chocolate journey through the Principles!
